Industry standard for home performance advice

Being recognised as a trusted and independent advisor on residential energy and resource efficiency in New Zealand has become a reality for five more certified Home Performance Advisors in New Zealand.
The Home Performance Advisor programme, launched earlier this year, now has twenty seven certified advisors across the country. Advisors go through intensive science-based training to gain a comprehensive understanding of how a house functions as well as how to translate this into meaningful and relevant information to Kiwis. Certification provides advisors with a point of difference in a crowded market of home energy advice.
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) welcomes the increased number of home performance advisors. General Manager Residential Robert Linterman says EECA frequently gets requests from the public for tailored in-home advice and the programme is filling a gap in the market.
Recently certified Advisor Sarah O’Bryan, Environment Centre Hawkes Bay Centre Manager, says “The Home Performance Advisor training was really interesting and valuable to my work. It’s amazing how much there is to learn and the trainers are knowledgeable, passionate and generous with sharing their experiences and insights. Getting my certification means we can now offer a service to our community that’s independent - we’re not trying to sell anything, but rather provide the absolute best advice for the particular house and its occupants.“
Certified advisors are expected to provide a full assessment, diagnosis and recommendation based on the needs of the client. Advice provided is independent and based on best practice, ensuring Kiwis get the information they need in order to move towards a warmer, drier, healthier and more energy efficient home.
The programme, a collaborative not for profit initiative by Beacon Pathway, Community Energy Network and The Enviroschools Foundation, has received a positive response from sector leaders who have welcomed the formalised training and subsequent industry-recognised certification.
Next training course
The next Home Performance Advisor training intake is scheduled for October 2014 in Dunedin.
